Unlike platforms like Are.na, which cater specifically to designers, Pinterest has an incredibly broad range of content. I don’t just look at polished 3D work, I draw inspiration from everyday snapshots, quotes, photography, DIY projects, and movie screengrabs. ‘I rarely seek out specific artists for inspiration because I try to avoid that kind of creative bias. Charlie Here! Not looking at the same artists for inspiration is a fantastic bit of advice. The amount of work there is on Instagram, Pinterest, Behance, and many other websites around is staggering. It’s great to have that one piece of reference that ticks all the boxes, but it can be so very rewarding finding new work out there. Even people like me, who can afford to spend a couple of pounds here or there don’t want to sign up for 10 different patreons. Have you got any advice for young people trying to get into the world of Animation or 3D Design? This has always been a tricky one for me to answer, as there are so many different aspects to it. Things have changed so much since I started in the industry. Back then the internet was just starting out and there was not a lot of info online, with generally 10–20 3D renders posted into forums a day globally. So it was really easy to be recognized if your work was good. The more you posted, the more people saw it, and the more traction it got. On top of that, you would get job requests and inquiries from studios. Today, social media is a just noisy mess, and it’s so much harder to stand out. It’s also all now algorithm controlled which was not the case back in the good old forum times. Spam and other ‘related’ content are on the top of your feed, polluting the good work! I do honestly believe that quality still stands out if you learn, improve, and put out quality work. A great thing to do is collaborate and speak to experienced people. You’ll learn so much from a handful of experienced people. Despite the internet being full of mediocre content, there are some good parts to it. I would not have been able to learn about diffraction grating (one of my latest tutorials) that quickly, if at all, without it. The noise makes it hard to start out, and you can easily watch tons of uninformative tutorials just trying to find that one good one! But the more you learn the better you will be at judging which then again helps you learn faster. To simplify this: If you have a deep passion for 3D, Animation, CGI, and you have the strength to push through the initial mud and noise, you will highly likely see light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re in it for the money, forget it. Could you give some insight into your creative process? I almost never sketch anything! I like to use a lot of references from Pinterest, Art Of The Title, etc.. for inspiration! I use them when thinking about colour and composition, but they are also great at giving you a lot of information very quickly. I always begin in Cinema 4D, and that's where I model and sculpt the layout of my scene. After this, I open Octane render and start texturing. I use After Effects to composite layers, Color Correct, and add flourishes (Fog textures especially!), then I use Topaz Studio to pump up the drama and stylization. Could you give some insight into your creative process? My process is not so linear I think and it varies greatly. Sometimes I’ll have a really clear idea of what I want to create right off the bat. I might sketch a little something and then try to bring it to life afterward. Most of the time, I don’t really have a precise idea of what I want to do so I just open my different software and start playing with shapes, composition, and colors. I usually discover something new and then it really inspires me when I finish the image. Sometimes you get a brief that is very detailed and the client knows what they need very specifically — other times you get an open brief and there is a lot of room to experiment. For typography projects, I will often “sketch” out a rough base in Illustrator, while with more illustrative jobs I often combine simple clay renders that I sketch over on my iPad. My way of working is more what suits the project and timeline best.
